Facts, rumors, and observations
Tape Head Tour '98 Minneapolis, MN

FactsRumorsObservations
Both King's X and the Galactic Cowboys put on a great show in front of a small but enthusiastic crowd.A small venue was chosen to accomodate the video shoot.Unusual place to see a concert... but both bands made the best of it. Even though it was small... it was packed.
First single from Tape Head will be FADE.Most 'radio-friendly' song on the CD.King's X shot a video the afternoon of the show for FADE, and Doug confirmed after the show that it will be the first single.
NOTHING TO SAY will be the first single off of the new Galactic Cowboys album.Judging by the reaction of the crowd... Nothing To Say should go over big.Personally witnessed the filming of the video before the concert.
Alan Doss has left the Galactic Cowboys, replaced by Eric ?Alan and the band had a falling out prior to the start of the tour. The new drummer fit in well, but time will tell how much the band will miss Alan's many talents.
Ty recently signed on with Yamaha to endorse their guitars, including 3 Ty Tabor Signature Models. After years of playing Yamahas, Ty decided it was time to get paid for doing so!Even with the absence of Joe Barden pickups and the presence of a bridge humbucker, the tone is still unmistakably Tys.
The set list was evenly split between songs from all 7 studio albums. This leg of the tour is more of a Best Of tour, with the second leg geared more towards a TAPE HEAD tour.Something for everyone on this leg of the tour. Click here to see the song list from the Minneapolis (10/19) show.
The new Platypus, Massive Grooves, and Moonflower Lane albums were played during breaks between acts.Jerry is working on his own solo release, possibly ready for release next Summer.Jerry confirmed after the show that he has a solo project in the works. He is hoping that Ty will play guitar on the album, which will probably be recorded at Alien Beans and Hound Pound studios.
The second leg of the tour will kick off after the first of the year, with special 'Radio Station' appearances happening over the holidays. The European leg of the tour, tentatively announced for early 1999 has been postponed. The second leg of the tour will consist of North American dates only, including several in Canada.
Doug is planning to tour in support of his solo CD, Massive Grooves after the Tape Head tour completes.Doug has already formed a group to go on tour with.Doug confirmed that Chad Lyons will be the drummer on the Massive Grooves Tour.

** The song selection really took me by surprise.... Go To Hell, Far, Far Away, and the encore of We Were Born To Be Loved. The band sounded tight, considering how early in the tour they were. It also looked like they were having alot of fun out there. They played with the crowd, with Doug purposely(?) disguising the words to Go To Hell, and Ty teasing the crowd on the changes at the end of We Were Born To Be Loved. I have to add that their most recent rendition of Over My Head caught me by surprise. The introduction was short but sweet, while the crowd sing-along was as strong as I've heard. It was a very memorable concert for myself, beginning with the opportunity to witness the making of the Nothing To Say video, to talking with the guys after the show. I highly suggest that you do whatever it takes to see them when they come to town.
